# Cite mode
When you are working in a document or in the canvas view, you can use **Cite mode** to add references. Simply **click the "Ask/Cite" dropdown to switch between** modes.
1. **Highlight Text to Get Citations**
* As you write, ✍️ **highlight any text** you want to support with citations.
* The highlighted text will automatically appear in the input field (this may take a few seconds).
* Click **Send** to retrieve relevant citations.
2. **View and Explore Excerpts**
* **Click on a direct excerpt** to expand and read the full quote.
* **Click on the article title** — it will scroll directly to the exact location of the excerpt.
3. **See Why an Excerpt Was Suggested**
* Click **Show rationale** to read why Gobu selected that specific excerpt for you.
4. **Insert Citations into Your Text**
* Click **+Cite** to add the citation directly to your Word document.
5. **Use the Assistant on the Canvas**
You can use the Assistant in **both Ask and Cite modes** while working on the canvas.
* **Cite Mode** → Select text on the canvas to get supporting citations.
* **Ask Mode** → Ask any question related to your project directly from the canvas.
